Baumwelt served as lead designer and construction review consultant for a comprehensive renovation of the sports courts at Givens Park. The project was originally inspired by a request from a neighborhood child who asked the City of Port Orchard to improve recreation opportunities at his local park.
The design focused on extending the life of aging courts while expanding recreation options for the community. Improvements included resurfacing two tennis courts that were restriped to accommodate four pickleball courts, as well as renovation of the basketball court to support futsal play. New perimeter fencing was installed around the courts, and upgraded LED lighting was added to improve safety and allow for evening use.
A strong emphasis was placed on circulation and accessibility throughout the site. Baumwelt designed new ADA-compliant pathways connecting both ends of the court complex to surrounding park amenities and neighborhood streets. A new staircase improved pedestrian access between the park and adjacent streets, while a small concrete seatwall created an informal gathering space for spectators and community members.
Baumwelt worked closely with City staff throughout design and construction to ensure the improvements were implemented successfully. Despite some construction challenges, the firm remained actively involved to help guide the project to completion.
The completed project revitalized a well-used neighborhood park facility while introducing new recreation opportunities that reflect evolving community interests. By combining durable infrastructure improvements with thoughtful attention to access, circulation, and user experience, the project created a flexible community space that will serve Port Orchard residents for years to come.
