The City of Puyallup sought to expand the columbarium facilities at Woodbine Cemetery to accommodate growing demand for cremation interments. Prior to Baumwelt’s involvement, three columbarium units had already been installed on the site. However, two of those units had been placed in locations that made further expansion challenging. Because the units already contained interred remains, relocation was not an option.
Baumwelt approached the project with a focus on designing a respectful and intentional solution that could work within these constraints. The design organized the placement of up to fourteen additional columbarium units while establishing a clear layout and circulation pattern for the garden. A new paved walkway was introduced to improve access and guide visitors through the space, helping the expanded arrangement feel cohesive and thoughtfully composed.
The project also incorporated a grading plan to ensure the site could accommodate the new installations while maintaining appropriate drainage and accessible circulation. Throughout the process, Baumwelt coordinated closely with the City and the columbarium supplier to confirm foundation requirements and support efficient installation within the project’s defined construction budget.
The completed design transformed what could have been a difficult spatial challenge into a respectful and well-organized memorial space. By carefully working around the existing columbarium units and planning for future expansion, Baumwelt delivered a layout that meets the City’s current capacity needs while reserving space for additional installations in the years ahead. The resulting columbarium garden now reads as an intentional and dignified part of the Woodbine Cemetery landscape.
