Logger Softball Field Improvements

Baumwelt is leading the design and construction administration for major improvements to the University of Puget Sound’s Logger Softball Facility, transforming an aging and difficult-to-view field into a modern collegiate venue with improved player amenities, spectator experience, and field performance.

The existing softball facility had become increasingly challenging for both players and spectators. Poor sightlines forced many spectators to sit well beyond right field in order to follow the game, and the viewing area behind home plate sloped away from the field, placing fans at a lower elevation than the playing surface. Drainage issues within the infield also affected field performance and maintenance.

The University retained Baumwelt to redesign the facility and develop construction documents for a comprehensive set of improvements. The project focuses on correcting circulation, accessibility, and viewing conditions while enhancing the functionality of the field for student-athletes.

Planned improvements include new code-compliant bleachers with ADA-accessible entry, expanded dugouts sized to support full NCAA collegiate rosters, renovated and relocated bullpens, and a relocated elevated press box to improve game operations and visibility. Field safety and playability are also being addressed through upgrades to sports netting, improved drainage along the first-base line, and planning for an optional underdrainage system beneath the infield.

Additional upgrades include a new Team Room and new infrastructure to support electrical and operational needs. Baumwelt coordinated closely with civil, survey, and electrical consultants while leading the preparation of construction documents and assisting with permitting with the City of Tacoma.

Now under construction, the project is transforming the Logger Softball Facility into a modern collegiate venue that supports both competitive athletics and spectator engagement. Through thoughtful planning, improved infrastructure, and enhanced viewing opportunities, the redesigned facility will provide a significantly improved experience for student-athletes, coaches, and fans at the University of Puget Sound.
